🇭🇺⚽ Papp Marcell Makes History in the United States!
Hungarian footballer Marcell Papp, who plays for the University of Vermont, has reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division I Championship!
This is an incredible achievement, considering that 212 teams compete in the NCAA Division I tournament, and only the top 3.8% make it this far.
Now, to learn more about this remarkable accomplishment, we bring you an exclusive interview with Marcell himself.
Congratulations on this incredible achievement, Marcell! What was it like stepping onto the field for the victory against San Diego, and what does it mean to you that the University of Vermont reached the NCAA Elite Eight?
It was an incredible experience. It was a very difficult match, but fortunately we had more left in the tank at the end. The stadium was almost sold out, the atmosphere was amazing, and we were facing a very strong opponent. Reaching the Elite Eight is a huge accomplishment not only for our team, but for the entire university and the whole state of Vermont.
The American college soccer system is quite different from the one in Hungary. From your perspective, what are the biggest differences between soccer in the U.S. and in Hungary, both in terms of competition and mentality?
The biggest difference is definitely the mentality—both on and off the field. The team always comes first. The competition for playing time is intense, and just like anywhere else, you have to earn your place in the starting lineup every single week. The top teams compete at a very high level, and the matches are extremely physical and played at a very high intensity.
In the U.S., academics are just as important as sports. How have you managed to balance soccer and your university studies, and what have you learned from the experience?
I already had some experience balancing football and university back home in Hungary, but here everything is organized extremely professionally. The professors are very supportive and always try to help find solutions. They schedule classes in a way that minimizes conflicts with training sessions whenever possible. You are expected to perform just as well academically as you do on the field, and the coaches take that very seriously.
If someone has the opportunity to follow this path, I would absolutely encourage them to do it. It’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, with incredible opportunities not only in sports, but also in academics and future career development.
What message would you like to share with young Hungarian footballers who are considering a similar path and want to combine their sporting career with higher education?
If you have the opportunity, don’t hesitate—go for it! It truly is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. There are so many opportunities, not only in sports, but also in education and your future career.
We want to get to know you better
