The Reality of Equestrian Scholarships in the USA for Romanian Riders
Romania has a long and proud history of sending elite athletes to the United States on sports scholarships. While the most established pathways have historically been in tennis, gymnastics, handball, and swimming, a new frontier has opened up for talented riders. Securing an equestrian scholarship USA Romanian athletes can leverage is a highly realistic goal, provided you understand how the American collegiate system recruits international talent.
In the US, collegiate equestrian is not just an individual pursuit; it is a highly competitive, fully funded team sport. For female Romanian riders, this represents a unique opportunity to secure a world-class university education while competing at the highest level. Because US coaches actively recruit international riders for their advanced classical training, your European competitive background is a major asset.
At StudyNSport, we have spent over 15 years helping athletes navigate this complex system. From our roots in Central Europe, we have placed over 600 athletes in the USA across 20 different sports, including Olympic bronze medalist Muhari Eszter (Notre Dame) and Ivy League athletes like Róth Rebeka (Yale) and Fehér Balázs (Cornell). If you want to play equestrian USA Romanian opportunities are fully within reach with the right preparation.
Understanding the US Collegiate Equestrian Landscape
To successfully secure a scholarship, you must understand how the sport is structured in the United States. The primary governing body for elite collegiate riding is the National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA), which operates under NCAA rules.
NCAA Division I and Division II
Equestrian is classified as an NCAA "emerging sport" for women. There are approximately 20 elite NCAA Division 1 programs and several Division 2 programs offering significant athletic financial aid. Because it is an emerging sport, coaching staffs have dedicated scholarship budgets specifically to attract top-tier talent, including international riders.
The NCEA Competition Format
Unlike traditional European competitions, you do not ride your own horse in US collegiate events. The host university provides the horses. Riders are given a mere four minutes to warm up on an unfamiliar horse before performing their test or pattern. The competition is head-to-head, meaning you compete directly against an opponent riding the same horse.
This format rewards riders with exceptional adaptability, seat, and hands—traits that are highly developed in European riding academies. The competition is divided into two main disciplines:
Jumping Seat: Equitation on the Flat and Equitation Over Fences.
Western: Horsemanship and Reining.
Most Romanian riders compete in the Jumping Seat discipline, which aligns closely with traditional European show jumping and equitation.
What Level Do Romanian Riders Need to Qualify?
To catch the eye of a Division I or Division II coach, you must demonstrate consistent success at the national or international level. US coaches cannot easily travel to Romania to watch you ride in person, meaning your athletic resume and video footage must do the talking.
1. Athletic Requirements
To be competitive for a top-tier equestrian scholarship, you should ideally be competing in:
National Romanian Championships (FRE - Federația Ecuestră Română) in Show Jumping or Dressage.
FEI-sanctioned international competitions (CSI, Ch/J/YR).
Classes with fence heights of at least 1.20m to 1.30m for Jumping Seat candidates.
2. Academic Requirements
Your athletic ability will get a coach interested, but your academics will get you admitted. To compete in the NCAA, you must meet the academic standards of the NCAA Eligibility Center. This requires:
A strong Grade Point Average (GPA) translated from your Romanian high school transcripts (Liceu).
Passing the Bacalaureat exam with competitive marks.
Proof of English proficiency via TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test scores.
Some competitive universities may also require the SAT or ACT.
3. The Recruiting Video
Since coaches cannot watch you warm up in Bucharest or Cluj-Napoca, your video is your most critical recruiting tool. It must show your ability to ride multiple different horses, adjust to different strides, and maintain a correct, classical position. We highly recommend reviewing our highlight video guide to understand exactly how to structure your riding footage for US coaches.
Why US Coaches Value International Riders
Top-tier American universities actively seek out international riders to diversify and strengthen their rosters. European riders, including those from Romania, often possess a deeper foundation in flatwork and classical horsemanship than their American counterparts, who sometimes rely on highly trained personal horses.
Because the NCAA format requires riding unfamiliar horses with virtually no warm-up time, your ability to quickly read a horse's temperament and adjust your riding style is highly valued. When you combine this technical riding ability with a strong academic profile, you become a premium recruit for programs in conferences like the Big 12 or the SEC.
