Your Sport is Your Passport to a US University Degree

For talented young athletes in Portugal, the transition from youth sports to senior-level competition presents a difficult choice. In the Portuguese club system, you are often forced to choose between pursuing high-level athletics or dedicating yourself to your higher education. The demands of training, travel, and matches rarely align with university lecture schedules.

In the United States, the system is completely different. The university sports system (NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA) is designed specifically to allow you to study and sport USA Portuguese style—meaning you can pursue a world-class academic degree while training and competing in elite, state-of-the-art facilities.

By securing a Portuguese athlete US scholarship, you can have your tuition, housing, meals, and training costs covered by a university athletic department. At StudyNSport, we have spent over 15 years helping international student-athletes navigate this complex process, turning athletic talent into global opportunities.

Why Portuguese Athletes are in High Demand in the NCAA

American college coaches are actively searching for international talent, and Portugal has become an increasingly popular recruiting ground. Portuguese athletes are known for their tactical intelligence, technical foundation, and competitive work ethic.

Soccer (Futebol)

It is no secret that Portugal produces some of the finest soccer players in the world. The US college soccer system has seen a massive influx of Portuguese players who thrive in the highly physical and fast-paced environment of American university leagues. Whether you have come through the youth academies of clubs like Benfica, Sporting, or Porto, or played in the national junior leagues (Campeonato Nacional de Juniores), US coaches value your high-level tactical training. A soccer scholarship can pave the way to top-tier NCAA Division I programs and even open doors to the MLS draft.

Swimming & Athletics

Portugal’s swimming and track & field (athletics) pipelines are growing rapidly. US universities boast some of the best training facilities and coaching staffs in the world, making them highly attractive to Portuguese athletes aiming for the European Championships or the Olympics. Our agency has a proven history of placing elite swimmers and track athletes into top-tier programs. For example, Hungarian swimmer Bohus Richárd trained at Arizona State University under world-renowned coaches, proving that the US collegiate system is a proven pathway to Olympic success. If you are looking to compete at the highest level, targeting NCAA Division 1 programs is the ultimate goal.

Tennis

Portuguese tennis players with strong national rankings or ITF junior points are highly sought after by US college coaches. College tennis in the US is a team sport, offering an energetic, collaborative environment that is completely different from the lonely grind of the junior individual circuit. Training daily with top international players while earning a degree is a massive advantage for your future career.

The Academic Journey: From Ensino Secundário to the NCAA

To secure a sport scholarship USA Portugal package, you must be cleared academically by the NCAA or NAIA Eligibility Center. This requires a careful translation and evaluation of your Portuguese academic records.

Transcripts and Document Translation

You will need to submit your official school transcripts starting from the 9th grade through the 12th grade (Ensino Secundário). This includes your final grades and your Certificado de Habilitações. Because these documents are issued in Portuguese, they must be translated into English by a certified translator.

At StudyNSport, our Negotiation and Enrollment programs take care of the official transcript translations, ensuring your academic profile is formatted correctly for US compliance officers.

Standardized English Exams

As an international student, you must prove your English proficiency to be admitted to a US university. Most institutions accept three primary exams:

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

  • Duolingo English Test

To understand which exam fits your study timeline and academic goals, read our comprehensive guide comparing TOEFL vs. IELTS vs. Duolingo. Preparing for these exams early in your 11th or 12th-grade year is critical to keeping your recruitment on track.

Securing Your F-1 Student Visa in Lisbon

Once you receive a scholarship offer and sign your National Letter of Intent (NLI), the next step is securing your F-1 student visa. The university will issue a document called an I-20, which proves you have been admitted as a full-time student-athlete.

With the I-20, you will schedule an in-person visa interview at the United States Embassy in Lisbon. During this interview, you must demonstrate that you have the academic background, athletic credentials, and financial support (via your scholarship) to study in the US. For a detailed step-by-step breakdown of how to prepare for this meeting and what documents to bring, check out our F-1 student visa guide.
